The work is inspired by our relationship with our planet, our spiritual links, past and present, and to the environment. Gently highlighting the issues and eco-challenges of the 21st century.
It’s a new way of creating bespoke sculpture that doesn’t cost the earth. Originally drawn, then transferred to graph paper, they are created from fragments of smashed 8mm toughened glass, crystalline, glittering and delicate. They are built up in layers, and bonded together with an uv-cured adhesive, to create my pieces.
Each of the glass sculptures is digitally scanned, their dimensions, texture and other details captured in fine 3-dimensional detail, enabling them to be enlarged, or shrunk to suit individual settings, from small to teeteringly tall. With a little imagination, the sky’s the limit!
One of the things that is great about the 3D printing process is that it enables me to offer sculptures that can,not only be to exact bespoke sizes, but can also be made in many different textured painted finishes, printed in anything from PLA to resins, but also, with lost wax casting techniques, they can be recreated in brass and bronze. I’m also investigating stainless steel as a fantastic medium.
Larger sculptures are hand finished to appear like rusty iron. All materials are environmentally friendly and water-based.
Bone or concrete finishes are works in progress which work well with the angular jagged forms for larger pieces.
I can imagine a whole line of Guardians, my Walking Men, towering over us. Or trees from ‘Deforestation’ reaching the heavens. Even an enormous Gaia half hidden among the trees. I’d love to see them on a giant scale.
The remaining glass piece shows a smashed sheet of glass seemingly penetrating through an unbroken one. This symbolising recycling and re-usability.
Essential attributes to a more sustainable future for our planet, and for us all.
